Picture Poem

Paradise

I see the water sparkling through my eyes
It is something I do not despise
it gives me the feeling of relaxation
I could see the trees reflection

Through the shiny water
   The day was quite hotter
For as the lights are acting as the sun
I guess I was just in the mood for some fun

As the breeze blows through my hair
The water so refreshing, it is rare
I ask myself “Is this real or am I just dreaming”
For I feel unreal, but I am still gleaming

A.O.W Response

The article "We're playing into ISIS' Hands" states that we are never going to defeat Isis if we keep attacking them every time they make a propaganda video. The author states "Not only can we not kill our way out of this war, but killing may exacerbate the situation." Therefore the author is trying to say that we are just killing ourselves by trying to defeat Isis. It states that we are just making the situation even more worse then it already is. The article also states "To be legitimized as a forceful threat, while at the same time provoking actions that lead to more civilian casualties when nations strike back." Therefore the author is trying to say that we are causing civilians to die or to be killed by going to war or fighting back worldwide.

The author's purpose in writing this article is to inform people that we are never going to defeat Isis if we keep striking back, because we are just damaging ourselves even more. The author supports this purpose by stating "Effective counterterrorism strategy begins with not doing what the terrorists want us to do. But right now, we are the dog being wagged by the tail of ISIS." The author was informing us that we are not fighting back with counterterrorism, rather with what they want us to do.

A quote I thought was really important for the world to hear was when the article stated "We have to stop broadcasting their propaganda. We have to stop responding with bombs every time they provoke us with videotaped slayings." I think this is really important advise that every country/continent can use. For example the author states "Otherwise, no matter how much territory we bomb, ISIS will keep winning. In fact, if you think the only way to defeat them is with bombing, they've already won." This helps people realize that striking back or trying to defeat them by wars will not help. It helps them think of other ways to defeat Isis or any group they are planning to defeat, by not destroying themselves.

Weekly Blog for 2-16-15

Call Me Maria
2-16-15
Pages Read: 30-80

Prompt: Pretend you are the friend of one of the characters. Write him or her a letter.

       Dear Maria,

I understand what you have been going through, and I know it is not easy. I am very glad that I met you and that we became really good friends. I understand that you came to the U.S.A with your father, and left your mom in Puerto Rico. I know how much you probably miss her. I know it is hard getting to know people and learning english when you come to the U.S.A. I am glad that you have made some best friends and some friends.

I am very happy to know that you have not forgotten about your mother, and that you have been sending her letters daily. How I your dad doing? I think it is very cool that you have memorized all of your dad's favorite foods. Remember that time we went to see American Beauty, and then we went to the store. Well remember that in one of the stores they thought you were stealing! I could still remember the look on the guy's face. He thought he was so sure that you were stealing even when you weren't.

Is it true that you have some feelings for Ricky? I saw you two and it kind of looked like you were into him. I just hate how he keeps breaking Uma's heart. I wish he would just tell her that he doesn't have any feelings for her. Then maybe Uma will try to move on. Anyways, I really think that you could be a poet someday. Your poems are very creative, and you put a lot of thought into your poems. I think it is wonderful that you keep writing poems for the fun of it.

                                                                                                  Sincerely,
                                                                                                           Whoopee

Book Talk Blog

Book Talk Blog for Week 2-2-15

This book talk will be on the book titled A Dog's Life: The autobiography Of A Stray by Ann M. Martin. The main genre of this book is fantasy, and children's literature. The main character of this book is a stray dog called Squirrel. Squirrel is a white puppy with black spots. She lost her mother when she was just 5 months old. She has a brother named Bone. She has gone through so much as a puppy, and has had to make big decisions regarding how her life will turn out to be. Squirrel is very brave and she never gives up.

Squirrel had to overcome many things as she grew up. For example loosing her brother , and mother. She had to learn how to survive by herself in every season. She then met a friend which was named Moon. She stood by her side in every moment, till the day she also died. After long years of searching and surviving, Squirrel finally finds the perfect home to live in. She gets an old lady named Susan to be her official owner. The mood of this book was sad, but a bit exciting. It is a sad book because you see how much a little puppy has to go through and what he went through. Then it is a bit exciting to see that she finally finds her owner.

I think the theme or lesson that the author was portraying in this book was to never give up. I think it is to never give up because Squirrel went through so much, yet she kept giving chances to people, and she kept going no matter what, and at the end of the book she finally meets her owner that would take really good care of her, and that would love her. I really did like this book because I am a dog lover, and I like to read about stories that people or animals have went through, even if it is fiction. I think what I most remember about this book is that Squirrel went to 2 different homes before arriving with her official owner Susan. I remember hoe bad they would treat Squirrel. I would recommend this book to anyone who is an animal lover and is looking for a good adventure to read. The viewer should go out and get this book because it is amazing to see how Squirrel survives, and because it teaches a really good life lesson to learn.

Weekly Blog for 2-8-15

Call Me Maria

2-8-15
Pages Read: 0-30

Prompt: Describe the setting – when and where what you are reading takes place.
Prompt 2: Describe the similarities and differences between the main character and you.

There are two settings in the book Call me Maria. One of them takes place back on her island in Puerto Rico, and the other takes place in the U.S.A. In the beginning of the book, Maria was a little girl and lived with her mother, and father on the little island in Puerto Rico. Then her father starting missing his own home where he was raised in the U.S, but her mother wanted to stay on the Island. Her father left to continue work in his hometown, and then he came back. Maria had the option to stay with her mother, or leave with her father. She decided she wanted to explore the world and leave with her father to the U.S.  Therefore right now Maria is living with her father in the U.S, while her mother is still on the little island in Puerto Rico.

Some similarities that Maria and I have are that we were both born out of the country.  Maria was born in Puerto Rico, and I was born in Mexico. Another similarity that Maria and I have is that we both learned english at a young age. Maria was taught by her mother and I was taught by my cousins and father.  Another similarity that Maria and I have is that we both cam to the U.S.A at a pretty young age.  Another similarity that we have is that both our fathers were born in the U.S.A, yet both our mothers were born out of the country. A last similarity that Maria and I have is that we like to make people, friends, family, and ourselves happy.

Some differences that Maria and I have is where we were born. Maria was born in Puerto Rico, and I was born in Mexico. Another difference that Maria and I have is that Maria was taught english by her mother, and I by my father. Another difference that Maria and I have is that Maria came to the U.S.A when she was around six or eight years old, and I came to the U.S.A when I was three. Another difference that Maria and I have is that Maria is a lot older than me, while I am only 13 years old. A last difference that Maria and I have is that Maria lives with her father, when I live with both of my parents.

Global Collaboration Reflection

Global Collaboration Reflection

My level of global awareness before I entered 7th grade was very low. Due to the fact that the only global awareness I had before entering 7th grade, was about Mexico and Africa. I have some global awareness on Mexico because I lived there before, and because I was born there. Also, ever since I got very interested in Ebola, it made me look into the 3 countries that were involved with Ebola. Therefore, I had some global awareness in the 3 countries that were involved with Ebola. The Article of the week (A.O.Ws) that we have done has helped me be aware of global news, and conflicts or events happening all around the world. I believe that I have a higher level of global awareness.

I think that being in this class, and being involved in the global collaboration project has helped me be aware of other countries like Sweden, and India. Now that I have been working on the Global Collaboration project my level has increased. I have learned what the schools are like and how they spend their daily lives. It helps me see the differences of what schools are like in Sweden, India, and the U.S.A. The Article of the week (A.O.Ws) that we have done has helped me be aware of global news, and conflicts or events happening all around the world.

My perspective of other countries like Sweden, and India. I think I learned that many different countries are actually very a like to our country. I used to think that most countries were very different and had very different kinds of school. I’ve learned that they may have different religions or culture, but they have many similar qualities when it comes to schools, buildings, and education.

The most interesting thing that I have learned so far is that the school in Sweden is bigger, and has more rooms for extra curricular activities and education. For example, the school in Sweden has a big cafeteria, its own study room, a ping pong table, a playground, and many other curricular activities.

Poetry Response

"I Carry Your Heart With Me"

By: E.E. Cummings

I carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

The poem "I Carry Your Heart With Me" is about a person who has lost someone who they loved, but that person is trying to say that they will never forget about the person they lost. This person is also describing everything that they felt for the person they loved and how they will remember that person they lost. I think the author wrote this because he was going through similar situation. I think he wanted to dedicate this poem to the person in his similar situation.

This poem reminds me of my great grandpa who died a couple weeks ago. I could connect to this poem because I also loved someone who I loved and who I will never forget. I could also connect many sad love poems like "Love and Hate" by Devin Wegner to this poem. This poem could also connect with many people on Earth with similar situations. So many people are loosing their loved ones every day, and to remind them just because their gone doesn't means their gone and they could be with you all the time.
